The Goal:
Beginning
readers empowered with the knowledge of letters, sounds and sound
blending skills.
The
Solution:
A fun,
fast-paced and systematic phonics programme that builds childrens
skills in phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, word-level
blending and segmenting and beginning spelling.
FastTrack Phonics
is designed for classrooms in which children are just beginning to
read. The sequence of lessons starts with the phonemic awareness
skills of hearing initial sounds, and auditory blending and
segmenting. Detailed lesson plans guide teachers as they teach
phonemes and letter-sound correspondences. Beginning word
structure skills including adding endings and recognising compound
words are also introduced. The lessons are appropriate for a
variety of age groups and are flexible enough to be customised to the
needs of a particular child, class or group. Group response
routines and co-operative learning activities engage all children in
the lessons. Frequent assessment guides instruction so that
teachers can ensure pupil mastery.

Initial
Training
A half-day training in using the programme is vital as it prepares teachers to
implement FastTrack Phonics. The training will focus on:
* Phonemic awareness, decoding and word recognition
strategies.
* Elements of lessons that provide engaging images,
routines and practice needed to ensure success for each child.
* Assessment processes and adaptations to lessons
based on assessments to meet individual and group needs.
* Training in beginning levels of co-operative
learning.
* Support for monitoring and
improving programme implementation.
Why did we choose Success for All? Certainly, its underpinning element of co-operative
learning (based on the research that shows children learn 95% of what they teach to someone else) was a crucial influencing factor. There are many phonics schemes out there but this presented a major difference. In addition, the programme’s holistic approach gave a structure that resulted in a consistency of teaching from Nursery all the way through to Year Six. We were already aware that many children were arriving in Year Three deficient in the strategies that they needed to become successful readers in Key Stage Two and we were hopeful that this would provide a structure that allowed all children to assimilate the basic ‘building blocks’ of reading as, and when, they were ready to cope with them. A clear system of continual assessment, analysis and diagnosis of children’s needs also gave us confidence that we would be planning appropriately for every child.
